Privacy Policy for Pile
Last Updated: Friday, 22 May 2026
Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how the Pile app collects, uses, and protects information when you use the app, the sign-in flow, syncing features, reminders, and related services.
Depending on how you use the app, we may collect or process the following:
- Account information: username, email address, authentication provider, session token, and profile picture URL. If you sign in with Google, we also process the Google identity token needed for authentication.
- Saved content: links, titles, tags, collections, comments, favourites, reminder dates, visit counts, and deleted-item timestamps that you create in the app.
- Sync data: when account sync is enabled, your saved content and account data are sent to our backend so they can be synced across devices.
- Device and app preferences: language selection, sync settings, reminder settings, AI sorting settings, and style memory text stored on your device.
- Shared content: text, URLs, and attachment paths that are shared into the app from other apps.
- Diagnostic and usage data: on supported platforms, we use Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics, which may collect app usage, device, and crash data.
- Notification data: reminder dates and related local notification details needed to schedule alerts on your device.
We use the information above to:
- store and organise your links and collections;
- sync your data across devices when you are signed in and sync is enabled;
- process links shared into the app;
- schedule reminder notifications;
- manage your account, sign-in, and profile features;
- improve app stability and troubleshoot crashes;
- support local AI sorting suggestions and style memory settings.
The AI sorting feature in the current app is based on local logic and saved preferences. It does not send your links to an external AI provider for sorting.
- Most link and collection data is stored locally in the app’s SQLite database on your device.
- Account and sync data are stored on our backend when you choose to sign in and enable sync.
- Some preferences are stored locally on your device using shared preferences.
- Signing out removes the local session from that device and turns off auto-sync there.
Sharing and Third Parties
We do not sell your personal information.
We may share or transmit information to:
- our backend services that provide sign-in and sync;
- Google Sign-In, if you choose to use Google authentication;
- Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics on supported platforms;
- external websites or apps you choose to open from within Pile;
- external feedback pages you choose to visit from the app.
Third-party services are governed by their own privacy policies.
Notifications and Permissions
Pile may request permission to send notifications and, on some Android devices, exact alarm access. These permissions are used only to deliver reminder notifications that you set in the app.
The app may also use share intents to receive content from other apps. It only processes the content you explicitly share into Pile.
Data Retention and Control
- You can edit or delete links, collections, reminders, and account details from the app.
- You can delete your account from the app, which instructs our backend to remove the account and associated server-side data.
- Local data remains on your device until you delete it, clear the app data, or uninstall the app.
Children’s Privacy
Pile is intended for general use. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new “Last Updated” date.
